Christmas creeps up sooner than expected and I find myself standing outside Bob’s apartment on the 24th. His daughter’s family isn’t coming until tomorrow and I thought it’d be dumb for us both to be alone tonight.

Also, I just selfishly didn’t want to be alone in my empty apartment, mulling over everything I did wrong with Eloise. I still haven’t managed to find a minute to talk to her and feel like a complete idiot because I know he’s going to bring it up.

I received invitations to Christmas parties from former teammates, but wasn’t in the mood for any of that.

I don’t really know what a happy Christmas Eve looks like. We never really celebrated it at my folks’. Although, I got a glimpse of what it was like, once, at the Miller’s when I was around 10.

I was at their house, as always, playing a game on the 24th and it ran a bit late. I helped them decorate a gingerbread house and smelled all the good food they were about to have.

Mrs. Miller asked me if I needed a ride home and I said no. I didn’t want her to know that nothing special was waiting for me there. I told her my dad was picking me up around the corner and just left.

I walked home in the cold, wandering around a bit first, trying to make the day go away.
